| Of course, it's great for any jeweler to be seen dangling from the ears or decorating the décolletage of a major star. However, some think the whole borrowing thing is getting out of hand. Winston, for one, is considering dressing stars only for the Oscars -- unless they're clients (i.e., those who also buy). The problem is, it's no longer just the A-list actress deciding, in consultation with her favorite jeweler, which piece she'll wear (as Susan Sarandon has done with Winston). Now, all too often there's a nameless stylist trying to line up potential loaners as if she were taking bids for a walking billboard. One Academy Award winner, whose name I promised not to reveal (and who has worked little since), once invited five jewelry reps to show their wares, then told them to wait in the hall while she tried on each with her gown. At least two found her so rude they took their jewelry and left. But for every demanding loanee, there's an appreciative star, like Gwyneth Paltrow and her mother, Blythe Danner, or Paltrow's ex, Ben Affleck, whose mom, Chris, wore borrowed jewels on her son's winning night.
Along with the jewels comes a personal security guard, and Joan Rivers says when the lights went out unexpectedly at a post-Oscar party last year she never felt safer; her guard immediately grabbed her elbow and steered her right out the back door.
